This section has articles regarding the national economy, Bush's appointment

of judges to the Federal Bench, including the Supreme Court, Bush's dismantling

of many social service programs and environmental protection programs and in

general the Bush administration's all out effort to consolidate power in a small

neo-conservative group made up of the major players in the industrial, military complex.

The Radical Christian Right Is Built on Suburban Despair

The engine that drives the radical Christian Right in the United States, the most dangerous

mass movement in American history, is not religiosity, but despair. It is a movement built

on the growing personal and economic despair of tens of millions of Americans, who watched

helplessly as their communities were plunged into poverty by the flight of manufacturing jobs,

their families and neighborhoods torn apart by neglect and indifference, and who eventually

lost hope that America was a place where they had a future.

The Great Housing Crash of '07

Pop Goes the Bubble!

This month's figures prove that

the so-called "housing bubble" is not only real, but

that its cratering faster than anyone had realized. As the UK Guardian reported just

yesterday, "the orderly housing slowdown predicted by the Federal Reserve will (soon)

become a full-blown crash".

All the indicators are now pointing in the wrong direction. Consumer confidence is

down, inventory is at a 10 year high, and the number of homes sold in July was 22%

lower than last year. As Paul Ashworth, chief economist at Capital Economics said,

"Things seem to be getting worse very quickly. Freefall is a strong word, but I think

it's the right one to use here." (UK Guardian)

Preparing for the Economic Typhoon

Gold traders love George Bush. They know that his blundering mismanagement of

the economy

will keep gold soaring well into the future. In the last year alone gold increased nearly $200 an ounce

capping off a 5 year run that has taken it from $274 per ounce to $635 at Friday's close.

These are serious numbers and they reflect the uneasiness with the global political

situation (Iran, Nigeria)

as well as concern about the oceans of debt generated by our Oval Office numbskull.

Is it really possible for one man to single-handedly obliterate the world's most robust economy?

Guess so.

After 6 years of looting the public till, the cupboard is just about bare. Bush has chalked up

$3 trillion of public debt which sounds the death-knell for Social Security, public education, and the

social safety net.

Estimate $3.3 Trillion Missing From U.S. Treasury

While Americans worry about the disastrous effects on our economy of the accounting

scandals at Enron, WorldCom and elsewhere, an even larger accounting scandal has somehow

escaped the public consciousness. According to estimates, the Department of Defense and the

Department of Housing and Urban Development cannot account for over $3 trillion allotted to

them by Congress, amounting to thousands of dollars of missing money for every man, woman

and child in the country.

Crumbling Under Debt

By John F. Ince, AlterNet
Posted on April 8, 2006, Printed on April 8, 2006

Last month, for the third time during the presidency of George W. Bush, the U.S. Congress

raised America's debt ceiling. By bumping up our own credit limit, the country's leaders

allowed us to technically avoid defaulting on our loans, but the move raises disturbing questions

about the

resolve of our leaders to ever put the country on a sustainable borrowing path.

Economists and businesspeople have been warning for some time that sooner or later, America's

binge of borrowing must come to an end, or we will all suffer drastic consequences. Despite

widespread concern about America's increasing debt load, the issue lacks the sort of "sex

appeal" that the media needs to go at the issue more aggressively. And without media

attention, politicians feel little pressure to deal with the issue in a substantive way.

WASHINGTON: Senator John Kerry (D - Mass.) made the following statement,

Defecating in our Nest

The battleground for defense of the environment is shrinking at an alarming rate.

Even seemingly untouchable protected areas of our increasingly fouled planet has

yielded to the corporate-owned politicians who are more concerned about winning

the next election than the health of the planet.

Internal Memos Show Oil Companies Intentionally

Limited Refining Capacity To Drive Up Gasoline Prices

Santa Monica, CA -- The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights
(FTCR) today exposed internal oil company memos that show how the
industry intentionally reduced domestic refining capacity to drive up
profits. The exposure comes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina as the oil
industry blames environmental regulation for limiting number of U.S.

Quotes from The American Taliban

Ann Coulter and many more known Americans

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them

to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing

only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we

killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."

"Not all Muslims may be terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims."

"Being nice to people is, in fact, one of the incidental tenets of Christianity,

as opposed to other religions whose tenets are more along the lines of 'kill

everyone who doesn't smell bad and doesn't answer to the name Mohammed'

America Is Running Out of Time

George W. Bush will go down in history as the  president who fiddled while
America lost its superpower status.

Bush used deceit and hysteria to lead America into a war that is bleeding
the US economically, militarily, and diplomatically. The war is being fought
with hundreds of billions of dollars borrowed from foreigners. The war is
bleeding the military of troops and commitments. The war has ended the US claim to
moral leadership and exposed the US as a reckless and aggressive power.

US Congress votes to make Patriot Act permanent

By Bill Van Auken
1 August 2005

By “unanimous consent” the United States Senate moved last Friday to

turn the bulk of the repressive legislation known as the USA Patriot Act

into permanent law.

Passage of the measure followed less than a week a similar vote in the House

of Representatives that would not only enshrine the Patriot Act in permanent

law, but would significantly widen the police-state powers it grants the US government.

Frist Accumulated Stock Outside Trusts

By LARRY MARGASAK and JONATHAN M. KATZ, Associated Press Writers

Outside the blind trusts he created to avoid a conflict of interest, Senate Majority

Leader Bill Frist earned tens of thousands of dollars from stock in a family-founded

hospital chain largely controlled by his brother, documents show.

The Tennessee Republican, whose sale this summer of HCA Inc. stock is under

federal investigation, has long maintained he could own HCA shares and still

vote on health care legislation without a conflict because he had placed the stock

in blind trusts approved by the Senate.

However, ethics experts say a partnership arrangement shown in documents

obtained by The Associated Press raises serious doubts about whether the

senator truly avoided a conflict.

A Gusher Called Katrina

By Dave Lindorff, CounterPunch

There is so much propaganda, faith-based economic theorizing and simple

ignorance and naiveté surrounding the question of soaring gasoline and oil

prices in this country!

For heaven's sake, of course there is collusion, monopolistic behavior and

price fixing in the oil industry. It's the way this particular industry operates.

Societies worse off 'when they have God on their side'

So I'd like to throw some things out that the public at large doesn't
know and never would. What I am about to tell is common knowledge in oil

what they see. I was an eye witness to what I am going to relate and
there are a good many others who could come forward if only they will.

Navy ship nearby underused
Craft with food, water, doctors needed orders

By Stephen J. Hedges

Published September 4, 2005

ON THE USS BATAAN -- While federal and state emergency planners scramble to

get more military relief to Gulf Coast communities stricken by Hurricane Katrina, a

massive naval goodwill station has been cruising offshore, underused and waiting

for a larger role in the effort.

The USS Bataan, a 844-foot ship designed to dispatch Marines in amphibious

assaults, has helicopters, doctors, hospital beds, food and water. It also can

make its own water, up to 100,000 gallons a day. And it just happened to be

in the Gulf of Mexico when Katrina came roaring ashore.

No one is trying to demonize faith based Christianity as a whole here, in

much the same way that no one at STA believes all Muslims are violent bomb

The point of the initial post was the alarm bell raised that Operation Blessing

is a legitimate charity.

No less an "objective" source than the Virginian-Pilot newspaper which exposed

the fraud of Operation Blessing years ago, and it would only add to the tragedy

and suffering to funnel money to a proven criminal enterprise.

The devastation along the Gulf Coast caused by Katrina and the

What we are witnessing in Louisiana and Mississippi is the truism that

The National Public Radio news anchor was so excited I thought she'd piss on

herself: the President of the United had flown his plane down to 1700 feet to

get a better look at the flood damage! And there was a photo of our

Commander-in-Chief taken looking out the window. He looked very serious and concerned.

That was yesterday. Today he played golf. No kidding.

New Orleans survived the Category 4.5 hurricane quite well.
New Orleans did NOT survive the Republican Party!
The inherent Bigotry, Classism and Greed of Compassionate

Conservatism     KILLED New Orleans !

Katrina's 145 MPH winds caused some wind damage, the most obvious to the

plastic roof coating of the Superdome. Some windows were blown out. Some

houses lost shingles. Some trees were uprooted and signs blown down. There was

very little structural damage to New Orleans from the winds of Katrina. It is possible

that there would have been NO DEATHS in New Orleans from wind damage alone.

(It is a little early to state that with absolute certainty, but so far, there has been very

little structural wind damage visible in ANY of the pictures. The ROOF Structure of

the Superdome is intact.

Why the Levee Broke

By Will Bunch, Attytood
Posted on September 1, 2005
Even though Hurricane Katrina has moved well north of
the city, the waters continued to rise in New Orleans
on Wednesday. That's because Lake Pontchartrain
continues to pour through a two-block-long break in
the main levee, near the city's 17th Street Canal.
With much of the Crescent City some 10 feet below sea
level, the rising tide may not stop until until it's
level with the massive lake.

Bush's Erratic Behavior Worries White House Aides
Jun 4, 2004, 02:17

President George W. Bush’s increasingly erratic behavior and wide mood

swings has the halls of the West Wing buzzing lately as aides privately express

growing concern over their leader’s state of mind.

In meetings with top aides and administration officials, the President goes from

quoting the Bible in one breath to obscene tantrums against the media, Democrats

and others that he classifies as “enemies of the state.”

Bush's Obscene Tirades Rattle White House Aides
Aug 25, 2005, 06:19

While President George W. Bush travels around the country in a last-ditch

effort to sell his Iraq war, White House aides scramble frantically behind the

scenes to hide the dark mood of an increasingly angry leader who unleashes

obscenity-filled outbursts at anyone who dares disagree with him.

“I’m not meeting again with that goddamned bitch,” Bush screamed at aides

who suggested he meet again with Cindy Sheehan, the war-protesting mother

whose son died in Iraq . “She can go to hell as far as I’m concerned!”

Zbignew Zingh: 'Pat Robertson's fatwah and the emergence of Medieval America '

By Zbignew Zingh, Dissident Voice

Pat Robertson was right when he suggested that the United States would assassinate

Venezuela 's Hugo Chavez.

Robertson, of course, is a hypocrite and one of this country's most effective ad men for

atheism. In the main, Pat Robertson is a medieval, witch-burning, fool. However, he

moves among people who are either within or near to the circles of power. They are

not nice people, but they are not fools. Robertson has either heard directly from this

country's rulers' own lips, or heard from reliable sources close to them, that the

US does, indeed, have President Chavez in its cross-hairs.

Congratulations President Bush-You Broke the Record

Heartfelt congratulations to President Bush, who on Friday August 19th
breaks Ronald Reagan's all-time record for most vacation days. The  old record was
335 days, though Reagan took his sweet time of eight years to accomplish this
feat. President Bush did it in nearly half the time. And with  another two
weeks of vacation on tap, he's obviously not content with simply  breaking the
record, he's going to smoke that record right out of the hole.

Great going, President Bush! We knew you could do  it!

Congressman John Conyers, Jr. issued a letter to Senators Kerry

and Edwards urging that they not withdraw from this case.

We have learned that the Kerry/Edwards campaign is preparing to withdraw

from the Ohio recount case, which is pending in federal court. This move comes

as Federal Judge Carr in Toledo prepares to hold a status conference on August

30 on this case, along with two other pending voting rights cases.

When most others stood aside, PDA stood for voting rights and untainted

elections in Ohio and in the halls of Congress. We stood to make sure that

every vote counts. We have continued to fight together without slowing down.

Report from Camp Casey Vigil

One Mother's Stand by Scott Galindez

Iraq Veteran Aidan Delgado opened the vigil with a heartfelt message: "In victory

or defeat the price is the same... A price that can not be measured in dollars or votes

but can only be measured in pain... We must make sure it is never paid again until all

other means have failed." In the foreground as Aidan spoke was a flag-draped coffin.

On the left side of the coffin, Iraq Veteran Hart Viges stood at attention. On the right

side, Charlie Anderson in full uniform did the same.

Ari Berman: 'A democracy in name only'

By Ari Berman, The Nation

"The drama of the legislative process is never in the broad strokes," journalist Matt

Taibbi writes, "but in the bloody skirmishes and power plays that happen behind the

scenes." That is where the Republican leadership, bolstered by an army of lobbyists,

sinks its teeth into the arm of democracy.

Taibbi exposes the spectacular corruption of the current Republican Congress in

a shocking, maddening and revelatory report in this month's Rolling Stone magazine.

Luckily, Taibbi has an expert tour guide: maverick Independent congressman and

soon-to-be-Senator Bernie Sanders. Taibbi charts how over one month Sanders

introduces four amendments, all of which pass floor votes by comfortable margins.

None of them become law. "How Tom DeLay and his cronies subvert the popular will,"

could have been story's subhead.

ROLLING STONE EXPOSE: The Courageous Fight Inside

the U.S. House of Horrors

Rolling Stone magazine today released an absolutely awesome and epic piece that sheds

light on how Congress really works - or doesn't work - these days. The narrative follows

four bipartisan amendments authored by Vermont 's Independent Congressman Bernie

Sanders (a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2006) who the writer notes "is the amendment

king of the current House of Representatives." That's right - "since the Republicans

took over Congress in 1995, no other lawmaker -- not Tom DeLay, not Nancy

Pelosi -- has passed more roll-call amendments than Bernie Sanders."

The magazine takes us on a one-month journey in which Sanders almost passed four

separate amendments. We get an up-close and nauseating view of how Congress -

which purports to be a democracy - now resembles a corrupt third world politburo.

Only instead of an authoritarian ideological dictatorship running the place, it is

Big Money that calls the shots on every issue.

An Unlikely Conversation With
The Cowards in Congress
Suppose you were an idiot... And suppose you were a member of Congress...
But I repeat myself. -- Mark Twain

What shameful toads you are! Yes you, our elected lawmakers.  Yes you, the

folks we sent to Washington in our names.  Yes you, the most spineless,

cowardly and craven Congress people in history. Yes you, the most bullied,

gutless and shameful herd of legislators ever elected. And you know exactly

who you are.

Where in hell is your integrity? Where in hell is your self-respect?  You’ve

been led by your submissive noses to do the bidding of liars and warmongers.

You’ve been suckered into applauding some of the most egregious crimes ever

committed by a US government.  You’ve become such a pitiful collection of

sniveling sycophants. And you know damn well who you are.

They are sunburned and storm-lashed. They sleep in tents that sit along
the muddy earth of drainage ditches by the side of the road. They have been
heckled by "counter-demonstrators" who chanted "We don't care!" during a
rendition of "God Bless America ." They have been attacked by fire ants and
hassled by local health inspectors. On Thursday morning, at about 5:30am,
they were blasted awake by a fourteen-car convoy of Secret Service SUVs
which roared through the camp at high speed while leaning on their horns the
whole time.

They have been jolted with fear when a local resident fired his weapon
into the air several times to make them go away. When the shooter, one Larry
Mattlage, was asked why he was firing his gun, he said, "We're going to
start doing our war and it's going to be underneath the law. We're going to
do whatever it takes." It is safe to say, therefore, that their lives have
been threatened.

The thing is, they've already won.

Documents Show Roberts Influence In Reagan Era

Newly released documents show that John G. Roberts Jr. was a significant

confidently debating older Justice Department officials and supplying them

with arguments and information that they used to wage a bureaucratic struggle

for the president's agenda.
